Avana Sponsors Local Radiothon in Support of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Avana has been a supporter of the annual Z99 Radiothon for the past several years; however, things became more compelling in 2020 when Avana was approached to support the fundraiser as a main sponsor. Fortunately, we do not have personal experiences correlated with the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; however, we do have close family and friends that have experienced having their baby in the NICU. Knowing how crucial the resources and equipment are in the support and assistance of the health and well-being of these babies, we knew we had to help, so we stepped up for our community in a big way! A way that will ultimately help to save babies lives.

The NICU must always be prepared to take care of premature and sick babies – each with unique needs. The Regina NICU cares for babies from all over Southern Saskatchewan. Babies born between 24 and 42 weeks gestation can be admitted to the NICU for a variety of reasons such as premature birth, respiratory distress, infections, complications during delivery, or because they are multiples. Some babies stay for a few hours, while others stay for hundreds of days. Its costs at minimum $1,500 per day to care for a baby in the NICU which houses on average 21 babies each day needing 24 hour care and this is why it’s so very important for our community to rally together so the NICU can continue to provide the necessary supports to help the babies progress and move forward in their development.
