We are hiring an Accountant. The applicant will succeed in a fast-paced, progressive career, enjoy working with people in a team environment, and lead excellently. This full-time salary role supports Avana’s new development growth in Western Canada. As the Accountant, you will support all aspects of the day-to-day accounting and financial management of Avana’s development portfolio consisting of high-quality multi-unit residential and commercial scale projects, with a value of more than $150 million under construction, annually.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements for Avana Developments and Avana Holdings for internal financial review.
- Review of General Ledger weekly, bringing any issues to the attention of the division members and the Controller.
- Reconcile bank accounts and credit cards as required, supporting accounts payable expense coding when necessary.
- Review daily cash balances in the bank accounts for financial review by the Controller and Leadership.
- Prepare monthly cash transfers between corporations as scheduled.
- Reconcile the weekly intercompany balances.
- Record and reconcile Investment and Foreign Exchange transactions.
- Reconcile mortgages semi-annually.
- Assist the Accounting Division in ensuring all entries are posted and reconciled for month-end processing.
- Assistance with cash flow preparation by the Controller and Bookkeepers.
- Assist the Construction Accountant with Holbacks reconciliations and payment entries.
- Maintain the capital asset schedule (additions, disposals, and depreciation).
- Maintain the prepaid schedule including additions and recording monthly expenses adjustments.
- Maintain the vendor's deposit schedule.
- Prepare land purchases and financing payments with assistance from the Controller and Leadership.
- Maintain monthly reconciliations and required documentation to support the annual financial audits.
- Assist the Controller with preparing year-end files and completing the audit process.
- Assist the Controller with preparing GST returns, T5018s, and T4As.
- Prepare detailed reports and financial analysis, as requested.
- Assist in the preparation of financial information for banking and financing requirements.
- Maintain the chart of accounts for all corporations.
- Approve utility online payments prepared by the Bookkeepers.
- Maintain the Accountant’s handbook and procedure documents.
- Maintain internal compliance with Avana’s project accounting processes, following company policies and procedures to ensure clear, accurate, consistent, and relevant project and portfolio financial information and analysis.
- Support and participate in continuous improvement of all related initiatives.
- Ensure adherence to federal and provincial government taxes to ensure compliance at the accounting level.
- Contribute to the positive culture in Avana in a proactive and meaningful way. Represent Avana’s values through effective interpersonal skills and communication.
- Focus on personal development and education, with and without the direct support of Avana.
- Attend and represent Avana at various community events and functions.
- Leadership may assign other duties.
Skills and Qualifications:
- A post-secondary diploma or degree in Accounting and/or a financial management discipline is necessary. A minimum of three to five (3-5) years of related work experience is required.
- Understanding of full-cycle accounting, forecasting, and budgeting.
- Knowledge of government legislation and generally accepted accounting principles.
- Computer literacy is required. Established understanding of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and experience with accounting software. Experience with project management software is considered an asset.
- Preference to work in a fast-paced environment and a commitment to excellence.
- Accuracy and attention to detail, with fantastic organizational and communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills to support our internal and external teams in resolving time-sensitive construction challenges. Ability to be a team player.
- Ability to effectively and creatively solve problems related to accounting, sequencing and staffing, as well as exercise tact and maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Must be legally eligible to accept employment in Canada.
Compensation Package:
- Salary: To be determined based on education and experience.
- Benefits: Dental and medical benefits package. 80% of the cost is covered by Avana. Option for employees to purchase disability and life insurance.
- Pension Plan: The Pension Plan will commence at the start of your second year of employment. 2% of salary matched in year two, 3% of salary matched in year three, 4% of salary matched in year 4 and 5% of salary matched in year 5. Avana’s matched portion vests 12 months after the first contribution.
- Vacation Entitlement: 20 business days per year. Must be accumulated prior to taking them.
- Annual Bonus: Opportunity to earn up to 10% of salary as an annual bonus.
- Parental Leave: Once an employee has worked a full year (12 months) at Avana, they are eligible for four (4) months of salary top-up to $15,000, with ongoing benefits based on the terms stated above. Pension matching will not apply for the duration of the period of leave. If an employee provides their resignation within 24 months of the paternal leave return date, the total amount of the salary top-up will be repaid to Avana.
- Probation Period: The probation period is 90 days from the start date listed.
- COVID-19 Protocol: Avana requires all employees to be fully vaccinated. Exemptions may be made for anyone who has a confirmed medical diagnosis with a doctor’s note.
- Criminal Record Checks are required for all Avana employees prior to being hired. This is to be obtained at your expense and will not be reimbursed by the Employer.
