We are hiring a Senior Accountant. The applicant will succeed in a fast-paced, progressive career, enjoy working with people in a team environment, and lead excellently. This full-time salary role supports Avana’s new development growth in Western Canada. As the Senior Accountant, you will support all aspects of the day-to-day accounting and financial management of Avana’s development portfolio consisting of high-quality multi-unit residential and commercial scale projects, with a value of more than $150 million under construction, annually. You will report to the Controller as a team member of the Accounting Division.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements, including variance analysis, for internal financial reviews of each company.
- Collaborate with the Accountant to review daily cash balances in bank accounts for financial assessments by the Controller and Leadership.
- Conduct thorough reviews of the general ledger.
- Handle monthly cash transfers between corporations and reconcile intercompany balances, assisted by the Accountant.
- Assist the Bookkeepers, Revenue Administrator, and Accountant in ensuring accurate posting and reconciliation of entries for month-end processing.
- Compile year-end files and oversee the completion of the audit process.
- Perform cash flow preparation and analysis.
- Complete the preparation of GST returns, rebates, T5018s, and T4As.
- Manage PST and WCB Returns and liaise with government entities.
- Process bi-weekly payroll.
- Create monthly budget reports for senior leadership.
- Generate detailed financial reports and analyses as requested.
- Prepare financial information to meet banking and financing requirements.
- Coordinate accounts payable payment run approvals.
- Maintain the Chart of Accounts across all corporations.
- Ensure strict adherence to Avana’s project accounting processes, following company policies and procedures to provide clear, accurate, consistent, and relevant project and portfolio financial information and analysis.
- Actively participate in continuous improvement initiatives related to financial processes.
- Guarantee compliance with federal and provincial government tax regulations at the accounting level.
- Oversee all aspects of the project accounting process, including project costing, inputting project budgets into construction management software, developing contracts and one-time purchase orders, ongoing budget management, and reconciliation.
- Interpret consultant/trade contracts and associated documents to facilitate purchase order development and adherence to payment terms.
- Manage ongoing project costing deliverables and audit requirements for each development project.
- Facilitate the timely delivery of accurate project reports to showcase progress and analyze final financial outcomes for each project.
- Continuously monitor project finances for irregularities and risk exposure, contributing to risk mitigation and strategic planning efforts.
- Execute monthly transactional account processes and reconciliations to maintain accurate and compliant project financial records, including third-party construction holdback reconciliations.
- Assist the Accounting Division with other tasks as required.
- Cultivate a positive culture within Avana through proactive and meaningful interactions, embodying the company's values and demonstrating effective interpersonal skills and communication.
- Pursue personal development and education both independently and with Avana's support.
- Attend and represent Avana at various community events and functions.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Possession of CPA designation or enrollment in the program is required.
- A minimum of five (5) years of related work experience is required.
- Knowledge of government legislation and generally accepted accounting principles.
- Computer literacy is required. Established understanding of Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, and experience with accounting software. Experience with project management software is considered an asset.

- Must be able to exercise tact and maintain confidentiality at all times.
- Must be legally eligible to accept employment in Canada.
Compensation Package:
- Benefits: Dental and medical benefits package. 80% of the cost is covered by Avana. Option for employees to purchase disability and life insurance.
- Pension Plan: The Pension Plan will commence at the start of your second year of employment. 2% of salary matched in year two, 3% of salary matched in year three, 4% of salary matched in year four and 5% of salary matched in year five.
- Vacation Entitlement: 20 business days per year. Must be accumulated prior to taking them.
- Annual Bonus: Opportunity to earn up to 10% of salary as an annual bonus.
- Parental Leave: Once an employee has worked a full year (12 months) at Avana, they are eligible for four (4) months of salary top-up to $15,000, with ongoing benefits based on the terms stated above. Pension matching will not apply for the duration of the period of leave. If an employee provides their resignation within 24 months of the paternal leave return date, the total amount of the salary top-up will be repaid to Avana.
- Probation Period: The probation period is 90 days from the start date.
